Happy 2018, is it just me or is January quite slow? I feel like i have been in January for 2 months now. Anyway, how many of you are already struggling to feel motivated in your goals for 2018? We all know that feeling, the new year comes and everyone is so pumped to push and go for it, beast mode, all that good stuff, and that’s great! The truth however is, as the days turn into months, that motivation and fire begin to wear down and we find ourselves unmotivated again and not sure how to get back up right?
Do you get that sometimes? You just feel so unmotivated to do anything? It could be in any area, blogging, fitness, career, spending time with God, learning something new etc. By the way, if you need ideas of goals for 2018, check out this post.
Well, then how exactly can we stay on top of our game and stay motivated year round?
11 Ways to stay motivated and accomplish anything
This is the most important one for me, Prayer. Before prayer comes into it, you need to understand whether this goal you are chasing is in line with the will of God for your life. If it’s not or if it’s in conflict with his will for your life then you will be wasting your time praying for it. I wrote a blog post some weeks ago talking about God’s purpose for our lives. Once your goal is in line with his will, then you have to constantly keep it in prayer and ask him for guidance every step of the way. I struggle with this sometimes because i come up with a plan and think oooh this is great, then i run with it and end up all tangled up, why? Because i didn’t seek the face of God in it. Set aside time daily to commit your goals and day to him. If you constantly drive a car and do not put gas in it, the car would eventually run out of gas and stop suddenly. That’s the same way with humans, if we don’t go back to God for energy, we eventually burn out and stop.
Take a break
We all need a break sometimes. For instance, if you constantly use your laptop and do not restart it or shut it down once in a while, it will clutter up and eventually break down. Same way with us, it’s important to take a break once in a while from everything, it could be a just a day or a week, just stop everything, rest, travel and do something besides work. Try taking a break every 3 months to stay refreshed. However, avoid taking unnecessarily long breaks especially when it comes to business.
Being grateful is so important, think of all the reasons to be thankful no matter how things seem right now. Every day you are alive is another day to start afresh. Be grateful for friends, family, the gift of life, anything just stays grateful.
Having a support system will take you far. This should include people that support your goals and vision and can lift you up when you need to be lifted or when every other person seems to want to run you over. It could be friends, family, spouse, children, mentor and so on. You do not need negative people in your life, surround yourself with the right people that can lift you up.
Find groups of like-minded people to join. Facebook has a ton of them. Currently, i love this group on Facebook called Boss girl bloggers. This group is everything, the support network is so amazing and i don’t think i would still be here if not for this group! There are several others on Facebook. But yes, find a group that you can find answers to questions you have, speak openly about your fears, learn from others. There is nothing like being able to talk about common goals with like-minded people.
Never compare yourself with others, you are only in competition with yourself and no one else. This is hard because every day on social media, you wake up and someone has a life that appears so much better than yours or they are doing what you do but so much more successful and you begin to wonder what am i doing wrong. I have been there, done that, got the T-shirt lollll. It’s such a terrible place to be in. Do not compare yourself because sometimes you are comparing your own 4 months work to someone else’s 4 years work.
What is your WHY?
You need to have a reason for your goals, That reason you can think of on days you feel like giving up so bad. For me, my end goal is to work for myself so i can dictate my own schedule. I want to be able to work from anywhere in the world and spend time with my family. Without a WHY you can be blown in so many directions and would end up not pushing hard when trials come your way.
Remind yourself of your goals
Visualize your goals regularly and remind yourself of your WHY. Write out the reasons why this goal is important to you, what it would mean to you to succeed, how it would help your life. Break it down into smaller parts and write out the steps to achieve each goal down to the last letter. If your goal is to lose weight, you would write out the steps to achieve it and what your end goal is.
Track your progress
Track how well you are doing with your goal. For instance, for mine, i would love to get 5,000 subscribers by December 2018. So i would track how many subscribers i have each month and see what i need to do better. I would also see what i need to stop doing or change in order to move closer towards my goal. If your goal is to lose weight, track how well you are doing each month, how much you weigh, how your clothes fit, how you feel and make appropriate changes.
No matter how small your wins are, always celebrate them. By doing this, you would feel even more motivated to push forward. If you are always hard on yourself and waiting for the huge victories, you would burn out and give up immediately. So for me, i always celebrate each new subscriber i get because of its one subscriber closer to my 5,000 subscribers goal. Find simple ways to reward yourself, you do not have to spend money.
I love this quote that says a man who reads books lives a thousand lives before he dies compared to one who doesn’t read any books and thus only lives one life before he dies. Reading books open your eyes and take you to higher levels that you won’t reach by being ignorant and not reading. Find books in similar fields and even in fields that you have no idea about to expand your knowledge.
No matter where you are in your goals, always stay encouraged and never give up. If you do not believe in yourself, no one else will. Always encourage yourself in all you do.
Break your goals
Break them down into smaller segments. For instance, if you have a goal to lose 50 pounds this year, break it into 5 pounds every month. This way you are not overwhelmed by how large 50 pounds seems.
