What is a ‘Cleansing’ Diet?
Fasting or cleansing, whichever you want to call it, the specifics vary:
The craze, which is relatively new, can take many forms. From shooting wheatgrass and ginger to smoothie supplements, this diet comes in different extremes. Pretty much any fruit and veg can be juiced. These tonics are supposedly great for your body. Wheatgrass is rich in protein, contains amino acids, and is full of minerals. So it can promote healing. It’s also good for our blood. Wheatgrass actually contains a high level of chlorophyll, which is essential for cleansing our blood. Due to its many vitamins and mineral, wheatgrass is said to help growth and development. Wheatgrass supposedly even helps with treating acne!
One new trend in juicers is the masticating juicers. The best masticating juicers out there have a whole range of features and have the power to juice even the toughest of vegetables. Masticating juicers work slowly to save all the nutrients and enzymes in the fruit and vegetables. Alternatively, there’s a huge variety of normal juicers with varying powers, sizes, and functions.
For others ‘cleansing’ involves cutting out all animal based and highly refined foods. Instead, people are filling their plates with plant-based meals. The idea is to use food as a type of medicine to cleanse the body. Some people believe that strict adherence to this diet can stop or reverse heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Unlike Juice diets, this isn’t supposed to be a day or week long change, plant-based diets should be for life to see the effects.
Cutting out Sugar
Carbs used to be the enemy and then it was calories, now it’s sugar. Sugar diets are the new craze, cutting it out that is, not adding it in. Sugar is said to be addictive, much like caffeine, our bodies can start to crave it. By cutting it out you should find increased levels of energy and clarity. Your concentration should be sharper, and it could help you with losing weight. Unlike some of the more extreme cleansing purges, this is widely supported by health and fitness experts.
Who does Cleansing Diets?
Juice diets took off after a number of high-profile celebrities shared their stories. Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is said to enjoy making juices every day as a way to get her five-a-day. Madeline Shaw, the healthy living guru, believes that juicing every day helps your skin and overall health to improve.
Lots of high-profile personalities have also cut out processed and refined foods, preferring to follow vegan diets. This is encouraged on ethical grounds as well as for the health benefits. Davina McCall has been a huge advocate of cutting out on sugar, and is a self-confessed reformed addict!
What are the Advantages of Cleansing?
Whilst different diets have different advantages, the obvious one is eating more naturally and healthy. Fruit and veg contain essential vitamins and minerals and so are everyday must-have foods. So if you’re eating those as part of a cleanse you’re on the right track.
What are the Disadvantages of Cleansing?
Juicing, for example, extracts some of the goodness from fruit and veg, but not all. By leaving the pulp behind, you’re in danger of not getting enough fiber. The fibrous pulp can be added to juices afterward, but that sort of defeats the point! The main problem is that this diet doesn’t deliver enough protein. If you’re not getting enough protein you’ll lose muscle mass. All in all juicing is a great addition to a healthy diet, but shouldn’t replace balanced meals.
The main problem with the ‘cleansing’ craze is the vocabulary used. You do not need to feed yourself greens and drink juices to clean out your body. Our bodies are intelligent things and you’re liver and kidney take care of cleansing just fine on their own! There are benefits of these diets to our skin and overall health and wellbeing, but our bodies aren’t unclean without them!
If you want to try any cleansing diet incorporate it into a balanced meal plan. Don’t supplement meals for juice, use them as an addition to your diet. Be mindful of the number of calories and sugar in any fruit you use. Also, ensure you’re getting enough protein and fiber in your diet too!
