Here is another interview with my dear friend Kosi. She has also completed a half marathon like me and will be doing another one with me next year! First off, i have to say besides the fact that she is motivated to stay fit and workout, unknown to kosi, her spirit of optimism is one that always amazes and inspires me. I wont say more, but i am sure her post will prove it all.
Tell me about yourself
My name is Kosi and I am a nigerian girl, born and raised in New Jersey and spent a couple years in Nigeria. I currently reside in MD and attending grad school at the moment.
How did you get into working out?
I think for me I just started exercising because I was motivated by others that did it but laziness at the time just couldn’t get me to be consistent but as the years progressed I just found myself just feeling that urge of wanting to work out and stay fit.
What motivates you?
One of My biggest motivation to stay fit is, lol its actually kind of funny, I want to be able to run around with my grandchildren when I am 60 and perhaps beyond that, God willing. Another motivation for me is, other people that do it, i believe I am no different than other individuals that make an effort to stay fit. Lastly just knowing that I am maintaining and appreciating this temple given to me by God just pushes me to keep fit.
What is your favorite workout? e.g. zumba, kickboxing, etc
To date my favorite workout is this Socaerobics class I take at Owings Mill. I am very into dancehall and I loovee to dance lol so this class is ideal for me.It’s fun and it gets the work done. Your waist, hips and thighs will thank you later lol. I also enjoy kickboxing, it gives you a total body workout and burns calories while building muscle.
What nutrition advice do you have for people starting their fitness journey?
Once I became serious about my fitness journey my biggest belief is portion size. I I still eat what i like but in smaller quantities. I have also added more fruits and veggies to my diet as well as increase in water intake. Gradually reduce the amount of white foods you eat such as white rice, white bread and fill it with whole grains. I find whole grains to be more nutritious and more filling. Cheat days are OK as long as you compensate for them lol by working out the next day. Most importantly DO NOT EAT AFTER 9 pm or with the intention of going to bed immediately after eating because that food is just going to store as fat because there is no energy to burn it and we dont want that. And let’s say you do have to eat, eat something lite that does not get absorbed in the body such as salads or vegetables or a Greek yogurt.
How often do you workout?
I make an effort to work out 3-5 times a week
What is your workout routine like
My work out routine normally consist of HIIT that I normally see on work out blogs or even on Lola’s IG page lol. During the summer I go to the track, do sprints, track field workouts and strength training. I prefer quick workouts and nothing too long. O I also make sure I add dancing into my work out routines moreso as warmup lol.
How do you set fitness goals and how do you measure your success?
I set fitness goals and measure my success by constantly challenging myself by seeing ow far i can push myself. I try to sign up for races and half marathons and always seeking new adventures to test myself and its been great. Another way of measuring my success is that most of my clothes are becoming loose :-P. Lol
Advice to people trying to rookies out there
Be PERSISTENT and CONSISTENT! You will see results if you stick to those two words and don’t just make fitness something of the moment but allow it to become a lifestyle. Take care of your body it’s the only one you will ever have; most importantly treat it as a gift from God.
