Bobby Saleem says his initial motivation for trying out for the show was the fact that he could no longer fit comfortably into his clothing without ripping them at the seams (what he likes to call “hulking”). “But my biggest motivation,” he says, “was to confront the reasons why I gained the weight in the first place, as well as to get a second chance at life.” Bobby grew up in Illinois, the middle child of three, and says he has been overweight his whole life. He attributes his weight gain to a poor diet and no exercise. When he was growing up, his parents worked a lot so he often served his own food. “I would literally eat until I was full,” he says, “and I had no sense of portion control.” Bobby attended Loyola University Chicago, receiving a degree in criminal justice and received his Juris Doctor at The John Marshall Law School. He says his “aha moment” happened when his pants ripped before having to appear in court one day, and he panicked, realizing he didn’t want to be “a fat attorney.” Now 28 years old and 358 pounds, Bobby looks forward to becoming a confident, healthy person after he loses the weight.

Wow his pants ripped, good thing it was not while he was in court for work lol. Anyway, his story shows the importance of learning portion control for our meals. Sometimes we get carried away with food and just keep eating. I usually advice using smaller plates, so your plate looks full even though you are eating less. Somehow my brain thinks i am eating a lot just because the small plate is full. I also sometimes chop my food into tinier pieces, plantains for instance, so again my brain thinks its a lot and i get full faster.
