Motherhood and Fitness are sometimes hard to combine. What motherhood has taught me about Fitness? After being cleared to workout after delivery, it was definitely a struggle getting back on track. I worked out hard during pregnancy and even in the labor room lol, but getting back after delivery was not fun. Sure I looked forward to it, but just the thought of giving up about 30 minutes to an hour of my bonding time with my daughter sometimes was hard. Also, my body was not as strong as it used to be, there was excess fat in several places. Coming to terms with my new body sometimes drove me insane. I have always been on the slim side, so this was sort of foreign for me. I remember one of my cousins had said some months ago about how a week after my delivery, she had come to visit and felt sorry for me because I had always put in so much to stay fit and now I was big lolll. Yep, it was a struggle even though I didn’t gain so much weight.
Today I will love to share What motherhood has taught me about Fitness to hopefully encourage some of you going through the same thing.
- Our bodies are amazing:
Our bodies are capable of such amazing things. Imagine carrying another human for 9 whole months!!! Feeding this human, nurturing and caring for it for the whole period. That is not a walk in the park and you should applaud yourself for the grace to do this. Just understanding this helps me know that whatever I put my mind to, I can achieve. Think of all the things you abstained from while pregnant just so your little one could be safe, alcohol, caffeine and the list goes on. You put the baby first before doing certain things, that’s selfless love!
- Fitness is not only about how you look
It is not always about fitting into that dress, being able to zip up your jeans. Sometimes it goes way beyond that. Sure, those are awesome goals, however, now all I focus on is being fit for my family, being fit so I can have a body that can sustain all that life can throw at it. A body that can play and have fun with my family without struggling. A body I can be proud of as a mother and wife.
- You are setting a new example
By working out and staying fit, you are setting a great example for your children. They see your passion and commitment to stay fit and learn the importance of staying fit too. Sometimes, they even emulate you and try to follow your footsteps.
- It gives you energy and motivation
Besides looking great, staying fit helps energize you and keeps you strong for your family. It also gives you some alone time to yourself. This is important because it helps you focus on YOU. It helps you meditate and just relax and be you. Sure, you may not be able to get more than 5 minutes a day but it sure helps.
- Make the most of it
While staying fit, do your best and leave the rest. For me, I do not always have one full hour like I used to in the past to work out. I try to make sure I get in a quality workout during the 30 minutes time I have. As mothers, there is so much to do and so little time. The day goes by so fast and so its best to maximize your time as best as you can. Your workout may not always go as planned but put your heart into it and push yourself.
- Comparison is the thief of joy
Comparing yourself to another person’s journey will only kill your Joy. The media shows women who had tiny baby bumps or who lost all the weight in days after delivery or weeks after. This can be tough to ignore but its the best. Your journey is different, each woman looks different and her body works differently. we also have different lifestyles etc so comparing yourself will only pull you away from your goals and even take away the joy of spending time with your child.
