Isn’t it so frustrating when you workout and eat right regularly but you are not getting the results you desire? You put in all this work and every other person gets their results but not you. That annoying scale won’t bulge and your clothes still do not fit, maybe even worse they feel tighter. What could be wrong? Here is a list of a few reasons why you are not seeing results in the gym. They are really easy to make or not even be aware of.
Why you are not seeing results in the gym
Talking halfway through your workout
A lot of people use half of their workout time to talk to people. For instance, you walk into the gym to workout for an hour but take long gist breaks here and there. In reality, you probably only got in 20 minutes of workout which is still fine if that was your initial intention. I usually have my headphones on to avoid small talk in the gym, and i know most people do too.
Reading while working out
If you are doing active challenging workouts, you would not be able to read a book. Many people read on the treadmills or stair climbers or other cardio machines. In order to read a book, you are probably going at a slower pace than you should and your focus is also more in the book than on challenging yourself throughout the workout. Speaking from experience, i cannot even hold the book up when i am really pushing myself to the max on the treadmill or stairclimber.
Texting or checking your phone most of the time
This is very common and i am guilty of it sometimes. We are in a phone crazy generation, everything is on our phones. Everyone taking selfies of themselves working out for social media, updating status etc. Yes its hard to ignore our phones but maybe put it on silent if you must have it on you while working out. That way you only use it when you need to, for instance to time yourself especially during rests. I also have a music playlist for working out, this way i do not have to keep flipping through for the next song.
Many people spend countless times doing a million crunches, If you have fat covering your tummy, yes you are toning your abs but they won’t show till you get rid of the fat layer. You need clean nutrition and workouts to help reduce the fat. Check out this post for ways to burn more calories. You need the right workouts to target your fitness goals and the right nutrition to accompany it.
Not switching up your workout frequently
Your body is smart and will plateau eventually if you keep doing the exact same workouts. You need to change it every 6 to 8 weeks to get consistent results. Do new things that challenge your muscles in a different way. If you typically use the treadmill, make it more challenging, or maybe take it to the streets instead. Try doing sets of workouts or triple sets to challenge your muscles more. There are so many ways to switch up and confuse your body. There are workout apps you can download on your phones for programs to follow.
Not challenging yourself
Many people stop when the workout becomes uncomfortable. In order to succeed you have to get uncomfortable, you have to challenge your heart rate and muscles for them to grow. You cannot stop at the last rep because it seems too difficult. Its the last 2 or 3 crazy hard reps that get the results so push harder! If lifting weights, you have to lift harder consistently, do not stay on one weight because it seems hard enough and you cannot imagine going higher in weight.
Not being consistent
If you keep giving up and having to start over you would not get results. Consistency is key. You have to keep at it. If you keep giving up, you will never grow but will end up always starting over. Do you have friends who are constantly starting a fitness plan? I sure do, it’s always one excuse or the other. Being consistent helps you get into the habit of doing it and also gets your mind and body into the right place.
Wrong outfit to workout
Wearing the wrong gym clothes or shoes will make working out uncomfortable for you and thus you won’t perform well. For instance, wearing tight jeans to workout or do yoga, clearly, that would not work, right?
You might think you are eating the right things, but do you know there are so many things that claim to be healthy but really are not? I wrote this post about ways you might be consuming too much sugar without knowing. Poor nutrition would definitely hinder your results no matter how hard you workout. It is important to pay attention to nutrition labels and know what you are consuming. It’s important to also take note or calories in condiments, alcohols, and beverages which often times people ignore. Nutrition pre and post workout is also going to play a role in your results. Get ideas from here.
Not prioritizing weight training
You are only sticking to cardio workouts and ignoring weight training which is very important to your success.
I also wrote a post on how to break through your weight loss plateau here, feel free to check it out. It is important, to be honest with yourself and evaluate to see where you might be making the wrong decisions and what can be changed.
